Experience the rich local history in an astonishing monastery carved in stone, built by priests half a millennium ago as a protection from the invaders. After a refreshing swim in a secluded bay, you'll visit an abandoned military tunnel nearby.

From a humble refuge to a thriving monastic settlement

Step back in time and discover the extraordinary Blaca Hermitage, a true marvel nestled in the rugged cliffs of Brač island. Founded in the 16th century by Glagolitic monks fleeing the Ottoman advance, Blaca began as a humble cave refuge and blossomed into a thriving monastic settlement, complete with a church, observatory, and a remarkable library of over 11,000 books, some dating back to before 1800.

For centuries, diligent monks transformed the wild landscape into flourishing vineyards and olive groves, building stone structures that cling dramatically to the valley slopes. Their community grew into a center of spiritual, economic, and scientific life, even boasting one of Croatia’s most powerful telescopes and a rich collection of astronomical instruments, thanks to the last hermit, Father Nikola Milićević, who lived here until 1963.

Today, its preserved interiors and museum offer a rare glimpse into a world where faith, knowledge, and the Croatian spirit flourished in isolation.
